Spey Valley Highland Junior Golf Championships

A total of 60 young golfers took part in the fifth Highland Junior Golf Championships held at Spey Valley Golf Course, Aviemore, this month.

Nairn Academy and Lossiemouth High School won the team events. Nairn Academy won the Highland team event for the Bruce Robertson Trophy with a score of 238 - Kelsey MacDonald (77), Ryan Elder (80) and Christian MacLeod (81). This was eight shots ahead of the UHI Dornoch team of Peter Renwick (78), Ross Mackenzie (84) and Liam MacDonald (84).

Rodger Clarke (79), Ewan Thomson (80) and Kyle Godsman (81) of Lossiemouth High won the Brian Anderson Shield for the best Moray school team, 13 strokes ahead of John Drummond (82), Shaun Thomson (83) and Owen Coull (88) of Buckie High School.

Ian Allan from Hopeman won the Duncan Allan Quaich for recording the lowest boys' scratch score of 73.  Runner-up was Lewis Reid, Fortrose Academy (74) and third was Peter Renwick, UHI, Dornoch (78).  Sammy Vass, Tain Royal Academy, won the Grant Trophy for the best girls' scratch score. Her 73 pipped Kelsey MacDonald, Nairn Academy by four strokes. Third was Rebecca Meiklejohn, Thurso High School on 96.

The event was hosted and sponsored by Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort and the prizes were presented by Councillor Sandy Park, Convener of The Highland Council.  Willie MacKay, Highland Golf Manager, said: “We were delighted to again have the courtesy of this wonderful new course for the fifth year of this event.  It proved a stern challenge but it was a fantastic opportunity for young golfers.

The leading scores were: -

  • Girls' Scratch (The Grant Trophy):  1.  Sammy Vass, Tain Royal Academy, 73;  Kelsey MacDonald, Nairn Academy, 77; Rebecca Meiklejohn, Thurso High, 96 (better inward half).
  • Girls' Handicap (The Sutherland Trophy): 1. Hannah MacKay, Tain Royal Academy (17), 83; 2. Julie Vass, Tain Royal Academy (11), 85; 3. Donna Mackinnon, Kinlochbervie High (12), 86.
  • Boys Scratch (The Duncan Allan Quaich):  1. Ian Allan, Hopeman, 73; 2. Lewis Reid, Fortrose Academy, 74; 3. Peter Renwick, UHI Dornoch, 78.
  • Boys Handicap (Skibo Trophy): (0-8) 1. Ewan Thomson, Lossiemouth   High (6), 74; 2. Ryan Copland, Milnes High, Fochabers (5), 75 (better inward half); 3. Shaun Thomson Buckie High (8), 75.
  • Boys’ Handicap (Highland clubgolf Trophy) (9+): 1.  Greg Forsyth, Inverness Royal Academy (11), 73 (better inward half); 2. John McCook, Grantown Grammar (10), 73 (better inward half); 3. Callum Reid, Elgin High, (11) 73.
